Award-Winning Filipino Graphic Novel Josefina Comes to North America in English Through Hot Tropiks

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

A haunting World War II story of survival, sacrifice, and humanity arrives in a new U.S.-printed edition.

MENIFEE, CA — Hot Tropiks announces the North American English edition of Josefina, the acclaimed Filipino graphic novel written by Russell L. Molina and illustrated by Ace C. Enriquez. Originally published in Filipino by Anino Comics / Adarna House, the book won Best Graphic Novel in Filipino at the 41st National Book Awards in the Philippines.

Set during the chaos of World War II in the Philippines, Josefina follows an orphaned boy who finds protection in an unexpected guardian, a mysterious woman whose quiet strength stands in contrast to the violence surrounding them. What unfolds is a haunting story about survival, compassion, and the fragile line between monster and human.

Blending wartime history with elements of Filipino folklore, Josefina explores themes of motherhood, sacrifice, and redemption, brought to life through the striking full-color artwork of Ace C. Enriquez. The result is a deeply emotional work that captures both the brutality of war and the humanity that persists within it.

“I was totally blown away by the story and the artwork. Filipino monsters in a World War II setting, with this level of emotion and visual power, felt unforgettable to me. It won the National Book Award, and honestly, that didn’t surprise me at all,” said Angelo Mendez of Hot Tropiks.

Originally recognized for its powerful storytelling and atmospheric visual style, Josefina has become a standout title in contemporary Filipino komiks. This English edition makes the work more accessible to readers across North America.

Printed in the United States by Hot Tropiks, this edition continues the company’s mission of bringing bold, original stories from the Philippines to a wider audience.
