5 Books to Get You Started with Filipino Komiks

5 Books to Get You Started with Filipino Komiks

I often get asked, Where do I start with Filipino komiks? So here's the list!

1. Trese by Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo

Trese is a fantastic entry point into Filipino komiks. The storyline is compelling, and the world-building is extraordinary. This comic, which can be described as a horror mystery, follows Alexandra Trese as she battles Filipino mythical creatures in Manila. The series is often compared to Constantine but with a distinctly Filipino twist. The world of Trese truly unfolds by the third volume, offering a darker, more intricate narrative than its Netflix adaptation. Start here for an immersive experience in Filipino mythology and urban legends.

2. The Mythology Class by Arnold Arre

If Trese is the Michael Jackson of Filipino comics, then The Mythology Class by Arnold Arre is undoubtedly Prince. This comic delves deep into Filipino mythology, but with a raw, authentic storytelling style unique to Arre. It’s a different experience compared to Trese and stands on its own as a masterpiece. To avoid mythology overload, it’s best not to read The Mythology Class immediately after Trese. Arnold Arre’s work is a bit of Filipino storytelling magic, capturing the essence of the culture beautifully. If you like The Goonies or 80's/90's adventure films, this is for you.

3. Elmer by Gerry Alanguilan

Elmer by Gerry Alanguilan is a personal favorite and a must-read. This comic is a testament to Alanguilan's masterful storytelling, tackling various societal issues through a unique narrative. The story revolves around intelligent chickens coexisting with humans, addressing themes of discrimination, acceptance, and identity. It's a profound, subversive work that offers a lot to think about. If you can get your hands on a copy, don’t hesitate. There are rumors of an English reprint coming soon, so keep an eye out!

4. Josefina by Russel Molina and Ace Enriquez

Winner of the 2023 National Book Award for Best Graphic Novel in Filipino, Josefina is a significant addition to your reading list. Written in Filipino, this graphic novel is accessible and can be understood phonetically. It explores the Japanese occupation era, depicting the complexities of human nature through characters who act monstrously and monsters who show profound humanity. This graphic novel is both haunting and insightful, providing a deep dive into a pivotal period in Filipino history.

5. Maharlika by Rexy Dorado and John Ray

Maharlika is a shonen-style Pinoy sci-fi manga that reimagines a high-tech Philippines. Set in an alternate history where the Philippines won its war of independence against Spain in 1896 and emerged as a global superpower, the story is visually stunning and thought-provoking. The series is still ongoing, but it’s definitely one to watch. The art and narrative promise an exciting journey, blending historical context with futuristic elements seamlessly.

Filipino komiks offer a rich, diverse range of stories that reflect the country's culture, history, and societal issues. These five titles are just the beginning, each offering a unique lens into the world of Filipino graphic literature. Dive into these stories, and you’ll find yourself immersed in a world where mythology, history, and imaginative storytelling converge.
