About the Book:

El Filibusterismo (The Reign of Greed) is the gripping sequel to Jose Rizal’s acclaimed novel, Noli Me Tangere. This pivotal work in Filipino literature was written by Rizal while he was in Brussels, Belgium, beginning in June 1890 and completed a year later despite numerous interruptions. The novel was printed in Ghent, overcoming financial difficulties, and finally published on September 18, 1891.

The Spanish authorities in the Philippines, particularly the friars, regarded El Filibusterismo as highly subversive, just like its predecessor. Upon returning to the Philippines, Rizal was arrested, exiled to Dapitan on July 15, 1892, and executed on December 30, 1896, for his alleged involvement in the Philippine Revolution. Today, his novels are celebrated for their sharp critique of colonial and feudal society and their exemplary blend of creative and realistic writing with political aspirations.
